Trip to Western Massachusetts not Pigeon Forge

Saturday the 14th

After some napping and a look around North Adams I began slowly making my way back to the East Portal where I met another rail-fan who had hiked in above the West Portal and he told me they had a cave-in. MassLive has an article about the collaps at https://www.masslive.com/news/2020/02/hoosac-tunnel-closed-after-collapse.html and The Greenfield Recorder at https://www.recorder.com/Hoosac-tunnel-in-North-Adams-reopens-to-trains-33757983

While I was talking with this rail-fan a railroad hired security officer came over and told us that we would have to leave. I decided to make my way back down to East Deerfield and catch trains from there.

It turns out that the actual problem was that a stream had begun seaping into the ground and down through the tunnel liner rather than its planned drainage. It eventually worked some of the bricks out and thus let the dirt fall in. PanAm and Norfolk Southern just called it "structural wear and tear."

Someone mentioned that it might be cheaper to daylight the affected section of the tunnel, but the cost of moving the doors would be expensive. Then there would be Department of Environmental Protection studies and requirements to deal with and the dirt and rock removed would need a place to be put. It would now be a costly task.
